What is the difference between Take Command of Your Writing and Crimes Against the English Language?
Crimes Against the English Language was designed to focus on some of the more common problems in people’s writing. Thus it covers fewer topics than Take Command of Your Writing does. It also covers topics in less depth. However, unlike Take Command of Your Writing, Crimes Against the English Language contains worksheets for every topic so readers can test their knowledge.
Crimes Against the English Language is a good choice for those who need a little more direction to improve their writing. Take Command of Your Writing is the better choice for those who want a thorough reference book they can turn to for answers to their questions on grammar, punctuation, word choice, and other guidelines on more effective writing. However, both books are valuable resources, regardless of your needs.
Why are Take Command of Your Writing and Crimes Against the English Language geared for limited audiences?
When I was a firefighter, I wrote Take Command of Your Writing and Crimes Against the English Language for my “extended family” of emergency responders. Nonetheless, these books can help anyone become a better writer.
Does Take Command of Your Writing cover report writing?
Take Command of Your Writing contains a short section that covers the characteristics of a good report. This section touches on important issues like:
• Being accurate and specific
• Understanding the difference between fact, inference, and opinion
• Being objective versus subjective
• Writing a complete report that covers who, what, when, where, why, and how
However, a good report is also grammatically correct and punctuated properly— topics that are addressed in great depth throughout Take Command of Your Writing. Crimes Against the English Language also covers these topics.
What Take Command of Your Writing does not do is cover specific types of reports applicable to emergency services. That would have been too much information for one book.
